Fairwood Firewood is a family-owned firewood supplier in Ontario helping you create unforgettable moments with well-seasoned firewood that keeps your fire burning. We are proudly 100% Canadian-owned and source our wood logs from Muskoka and Bancroft forests. 

Our History

The Spark

Fairwood Firewood dates all the way back to the 1930s when our grandfather, Howard Fairty, began farming. His family had moved from the city when Grandpa was 14 to begin beef and dairy farming.

Inspired by a neighbour’s beautiful golf course, he ventured into sod farming and became one of the first sod farmers in Ontario. Eventually, he began selling firewood in the 1950s.

Growth

Grandpa believed in cultivating the ground and growing what we needed.

Selling firewood was hard, manual work back without the machinery we use today.

His hard work paid off and Grandpa ran the company successfully for 30 years.

Embers

In the 1980s, Grandpa made the tough decision to close the company.

By this time, the market had become heavily saturated and the lack of modern technology to streamline processes made it difficult to proceed.

Resurgence

Ours is a story of renewed hope. After taking time to reassess the market and develop a streamlined process using modern technology, Fairwood Firewood is back and stronger than ever. We have expanded in scope and skill with a dedicated team making it all possible.

Our company’s name is a tribute to our grandfather, who instilled a strong work ethic and cultivated the joy of supplying a highly valuable product to the market in each of us. Grandpa was a trailblazer in many ways. As his grandchildren, we consider it a great honour to continue his legacy and share his vision with the world.

      A face cord of wood is a term used to describe a specific measurement of a stack of wood. It is a common measurement used for firewood, but it can also refer to other kinds of wood, such as lumber. Different types of wood in a face cord can alter the overall volume as the size and shape of the wood changes. However, the face cord dimensions remain the same.

      How Big Is a Cord of Wood?

      A face cord of wood measures 4 feet high by 8 feet long. The depth of a face cord varies between 12 to 18 inches. At Fairwood Firewood, our face cord firewood is 4’ x 8’ x 14”. The overall volume is about 37.3 cubic feet.

      Face Cord vs. Full Cord

      A full cord, like a face cord, is another measurement used for a stack of wood. Here are the differences between the two:

      • Face Cord – A face cord of wood is one-third the size of a full cord. It supplies a sufficient amount of firewood for residential or commercial use. This includes homes, cottages, restaurants, hotels, and resorts.
      • Full Cord – A full cord of wood contains three rows of stacked wood, each measuring 4 feet high by 8 feet long and between 12 and 18 inches deep. The total depth of a full cord ranges from 36” to 54”. At Fairwood Firewood, our full cords measure 4’ x 8’ x 42”.

      One full cord contains about 3 face cords. While the height and length of a full cord remain the same as one face cord, the depth changes from 14” to 42”.

      On average, a face cord of firewood lasts between 3 and 4 weeks. However, this varies depending on the amount of firewood you use at once, how often you use it, and what you use the firewood for. In contrast, a full cord of firewood may last 8 to 12 weeks.

      Yes, a face cord typically fits in the back of a pickup truck. The average truck bed is between 6.5 and 8 feet long and a face cord is 8 feet long. If your truck is under 8 feet long, you’ll need to carefully re-stack the wood to make it fit without compromising the near view window.
